The start of 2005 was incredible not least because the 1st of the Polaris World developments was being handed over to the owners. Also, we had imported our first two 40´HQ containers direct from factories in China. 2005 was our best year in terms of turnover, closely followed by 2008. Over the years 11 other furniture shops have opened and closed on the industrial estate, we were the first and at the moment the only remaining furniture store still trading. A testament to our strong business and customer focussed service.
Trading in Difficult Conditions
During 2008 and with the realisation that there would be the inevitable slow down in the new housing market, we decided to move into a newly vacated unit 3 doors along from our original store, but importantly still on the main road of the estate. This was a 6 month plan started in the April, and being complete ready for us to open the new store on September 1st. This move although requiring a large amount of financial investment, now secured the business, saving us 1100€ per month in rent alone. A mezzanine floor was added to the warehouse in January 2009. The premises boasts an area of 200m2 for retail sales and 450m2 of storage. All housed under one roof. 2009 ended up being a good year with turnover still well into a healthy 4 figures. 2010 continues to be a good trading year, with a nice profit being posted at the end of quarter 2.
Importation
As the business grew it became obvious that we needed to look at importing more from overseas, this would allow us to increase margins and offer rapid deliveries for our clients. To enable this we again had to search for warehouse facilities, initially we rented a 300m2 warehouse in San Pedro Del Pinatar, as we outgrew this we then moved to a 500m2 warehouse on the same estate as the store.
Since our first steps into importation we have upto now imported over 30 containers of furniture from various countries including, Malaysia, China & Taiwan, Romania, U.K., and India.
We have also attended furniture fairs and visited factories in Istanbul, Shanghai, Valencia, N.E.C. U.K. Visiting the furniture fair at the N.E.C. was to be a revelation as we are now able to delve into the huge market in the U.K. and supply ourselves with frequent small shipments from importers based in the U.K.
